At an out-of-network practice in Manhattan, anxiety therapy usually means you pay a set fee per session and then ask your insurance to reimburse part of it using a superbill. At CAP Therapy NYC, individual sessions range from $150 to $400 depending on the clinician, and many plans reimburse part of that after your out-of-network deductible.
This guide explains how out-of-network therapy works, how superbills work, how it compares to in-network care, and what to ask before you book. You can also read about our approach to anxiety therapy in NYC.
Fees vary widely across Manhattan, so it's worth checking each practice's published rates. Here are CAP's current fees for a 45-minute individual session (CAP Therapy NYC, n.d.):
Payment is due at each session, and late cancellations (under 48 hours) are charged the full fee. See our fees and insurance page for the latest details.
"Out-of-network" means the practice doesn't bill your insurance directly. You pay the session fee, then submit a claim to your insurer for reimbursement.
How much you get back depends on your plan. Many plans reimburse around 50–80% of the fee after your out-of-network deductible is met, but reimbursement is never guaranteed (CAP Therapy NYC, n.d.). Before you start, call your insurer and ask:
A superbill is an itemized receipt with everything your insurer needs to process a claim: dates, codes and your therapist's credentials. At CAP, we hand you one ready to go. You submit it through your insurer's portal, app or by mail, and your insurer reviews it, often within a few weeks.
HSA and FSA cards can usually be used for therapy, and CAP accepts them.
It depends on what matters most to you. Both have real trade-offs.
In-network therapy usually costs less per session, since you pay a copay or coinsurance. The trade-off can be a narrower choice of therapists, waitlists, and an insurer that has more say in how long you're seen.
Out-of-network therapy usually costs more upfront. In return, you can choose any therapist, including specialists, and you and your therapist decide on the length and focus of treatment. Your insurer still needs a diagnosis code to reimburse you.
There's no single right answer. If cost is the deciding factor, an in-network therapist or a lower-cost clinic may be the best fit, and a good practice will point you toward options.
Under the federal No Surprises Act, if you're paying without using insurance, you have the right to a Good Faith Estimate of expected costs before care begins (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, n.d.). CAP provides a written Good Faith Estimate before your first session.
Many do, and it's worth using. CAP offers a free 15-minute consult so you can ask about fees, approach and fit before booking. It's also a good time to ask which clinician tier fits your needs and budget.
